V.O. Key on the Farm Bureau

V.O. Key, in a footnote in Southern Politics (1949), on the nature of the Farm Bureau:

This observer's conclusions are underpinned by the story of the Arkansas Representative who ran for the United States Senate. The Representative had supported the Farm Security Administration, an action that should have won him votes in a state [Arkansas] whose white farmers were more than 50 per cent tenants - if they voted. Yet his defeat, the Farm Bureau bureaucracy could claim, came from the publicity they gave to his farm security votes. It may need to be repeated, to make the point, that the Farm Bureau is run mainly for the benefit of farmers who hire tenants - not farmers generally.
